Rumours surrounding Lionel Messi’s future have been flying around more than usual this season, with a number of top clubs linked with the three time Ballon d’Or winner.
While Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal have all been touted with landing the Argentine, Chelsea have been made 7/1 favourites to clinch his signature, for a number of foolproof reasons. Here are just a few:
He has fallen out with Luis Enrique
Yes, the man who is arguable the best footballer ever is leaving the club that he joined way back in 2000 because he has fallen out with a manager who has been at the club for a whole eight months.
Barcelona will be upset to see the man who has ultimately won the club so many trophies over the years leave, but if they want to hang on to their prestigious, acclaimed and celebrated manager, they will have to let Messi join Mourinho’s Chelsea. There’s just no other option.
He learnt English
This is another solid reason. Of course, it has nothing to do with the fact that English is one of the most widely spoken languages and the opportunities (outside of football) that will come with knowing how to speak it.
Adidas are paying him a small fortune. They want him to star in their adverts.
He followed Chelsea on Instagram
I understand why this has added some fuel to the fire, but is Instagram really a great source for future transfers? I’ll admit (as a Chelsea fan) that I did squee with excitement when I saw the headlines this morning, but it’s more than likely nothing at all, or an intricate Rooney-esque ploy to squeeze some more money out of Barcelona.
His pay packet isn’t large enough
Why should Cristiano Ronaldo earn more when he’s won less Ballon d’Or trophies? If Barcelona refuse to pay up, Chelsea are going to splash £200 million to sign him AND top Ronaldo’s £19 million a year wages as well.
So what if Chelsea have just managed to get their finances in order after ten years of splashing out ridiculous transfer fees on the likes of Fernando Torres.
Financial Fair Play? Pfft. Who cares.
Roman Abramovich wants him
Actually… That’s a fair argument. He probably will be heading to Stamford Bridge, after all.
