The Red Devils haven’t quite got going yet this season. With 13 goals conceded in just 9 games, and with the injury crisis that has largely affected the defensive areas, Manchester United will have to reinforce their back-line if they want to get back to winning ways.
Currently sitting in 10th place in the table, it is fair to say that the main problem in the side is the defence. With the likes of Angel Di Maria, Wayne Rooney, Radamel Falcao, Juan Mata and Robin van Persie in attack, the Red Devils have no problems up front. In fact, one of the positives this season is the return of brilliant attacking football to Manchester United.
However, in their first nine games, Louis van Gaal has already used eight different centre-back combinations, resulting in only two clean sheets, against Burnley and Queens Park Rangers respectively, suggesting consistency is needed in order to ensure better defensive performances.
The January transfer window is slowly arriving. Having already spent an astonishing £145.5 million in the summer, van Gaal finds himself dealing with an unbalanced squad. Defence will surely be his priority in the upcoming transfer window.
Man Utd have already been linked with numerous targets, mainly defenders, but who should they really sign?
- Mats Hummels
- Gerard Piqué
- Aymeric Laporte
- Benedikt Howedes
- Terence Kongolo
With Pique’s poor performances this season, and Kongolo’s inexperience, it is fair to say that those two will not be the solution to United’s defensive woes.
Hummels, one of the best centre-backs in the world, remains the perfect solution. However, Man Utd will have to pay big, real big, in order to bring the big German to Old Trafford. A World Cup winner, Hummels has already shown his immense potential, and has assumed himself as one of the best in his position. United may have to splash out £40 million to sign him, but he’s worth every penny.
On the other hand, we have another World Cup winner in Howedes. Having shown his ability to play as a centre-back, a full-back, and in midfield, Howedes is also a big possibility and would be an excellent signing for the Red Devils. A partnership between him and Rojo will be enough to ensure a consistent defensive display.
In addition, one of the best prospects in the world, Laporte is starting to show his worth. Laporte is a Golden Boy nominee and is certainly a contender to win the prestigious European award. But with immense potential comes a heavy price. United may have to pay £30 million to land the 20-year-old, but he is still a big possibility.
With Manchester United’s injury crisis, and their poor defensive displays, the Red Devils will certainly be looking to strengthen at the back in January. Howedes and Laporte seem to fit the bill.
