The painstaking search for Angel Di Maria has been ongoing for days. And now he has finally been found and pictured in Doha, Qatar ahead of a transfer to Paris Saint-Germain.
The Argentinean will undergo a medical at the Aspire Centre on Monday, after Manchester United agreed to a switch worth £44.4 million with the French champions.
The 27-year-old failed to join his Manchester United team-mates on their tour of America, sparking speculation about his future at Old Trafford, which prompted Louis van Gaal to admin that he didn’t know his whereabouts.
The Premier League’s most expensive player failed to adapt to life in England despite a dream start. Van Gaal even warned that his player would have to embrace the club’s philosophy if he was to establish himself at Old Trafford.
The Dutchman said, “The players have had to adapt to the philosophy and Di Maria has to do that. He can still do that, of course, because every player can. But it’s important that he wants to do that in his head. When you are open for coaching then you can change. But a change of behaviour is difficult because it’s not easy.”
Three goals and ten assists in 27 Premier League games belied Di Maria’s lower-than-expected performances. He took the league by storm after scoring a jaw-dropping chip against Leicester City back in September, but things were downhill from there, as a burglary attempt on his Chesire home evidently affected his game.
A dismal year on and off the pitch is now set to cost The Red Devils around £15 million in losses. Despite that, Van gaal will be happy to see the back of a player whose wages cost the club in excess of £8 million in just one year, most of which he spent on the bench.
In the exciting talent of Memphis Depay and the expected arrival of Pedro, the Red Devils will be confident that they have found what they need to face their upcoming challenges, but the fans will always be left wondering: ‘what if Di Maria was given a second chance in United’s iconic Number 7 shirt?’.
