Transfer news that Manchester United fans have been waiting for this morning, as Argentine defender Marcos Rojo announces to an Argentine radio station, Radio Continental, that he is set to sign for the club.
Rojo, 24, confirmed the move by saying, “It feels like a dream, to be a Manchester United player. Leaving Sporting wasn’t easy.”
The news comes as a huge relief to Manchester United, as they have only three recognised centre backs in their first team squad, one of whom is currently injured.
The deal, worth an alleged £16 million, is yet to be ratified by the clubs but Rojo, who can also play at left back, seems fairly confident of its completion. It was thought that the deal was close last week, but the move hit a snag due to complications surrounding third party ownership.
Although Sporting Lisbon are responsible for the management of the player, 75 percent of his rights are believed to be owned by Doyen Sports, who fronted the majority of the £3.5 million fee that saw him move to Lisbon from Spartak Moscow.
Further complications arose when it emerged that Spartak Moscow were owed 20% of any future fee as part of that agreement. This means that from the £16 million, Sporting Lisbon will only have netted a mere £800,000.
Sporting were hoping to hold out for more for their player, who had an impressive summer at the World Cup in Brazil. This reluctance led to Rojo refusing to train with the club, after he handed in a transfer request to force through the move, which he was later disciplined for by Sporting.
But it is understood that Manchester United have sweetened the deal by offering Portuguese misfit Nani on a season long loan as part of the deal. Nani signed for Manchester United from the Portuguese giants for a fee believed to have been worth up to £17 million, hoping to follow in the footsteps of Cristiano Ronaldo.
Nani never really lived up to his potential and struggled to forge any consistency into his game. It has been a frustrating seven years for both Nani and the Manchester United faithful, and they will hope that Nani is able to use the move to reignite his career. On his day, Nani can be unplayable, but unfortunately, that day doesn’t come around often enough.
