Mauricio Pochettino, according to reports in Spain, is looking to bolster his defence with the surprise purchase of Sevilla defender Federico Fazio.
The 27-year-old centre back and has a buy-out clause of £8 million, which Pochettino is set to trigger in the coming days. Fazio would be the fifth signing of the summer for Tottenham Hotspur and he would add depth to their highly criticised defence.
In recent seasons, notably last season, the Tottenham defence had been clearly inferior to those of their rivals, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea. They conceded more than four goals in a single game on five separate occasions. Fazio would add some depth and quality to the back-line, which would make sure that the same mistakes are not repeated this time round.
Instead of going for youth, going for Fazio may be a wise move as he has experience at both club and international level, which he could bring to White Hart Lane. He has played 148 times for Sevilla, after coming through the Sevilla B squad. He also has two Argentina caps to his name.
Last season he played 29 times for the Europa League winning team and his last outing was in the Super Cup final against Real Madrid. This level of experience would be vital to Tottenham, who have also recently signed Eric Dier, a young centre back from Sporting Lisbon.
With Dawson on the brink of leaving – rumoured to be on the brink of joining Hull City – Federico would be an obvious replacement, as talks with Villarreal’s Mateo Musacchio have stalled. Fazio appears to be a bit of a back-up plan, nevertheless he could be the answer to Tottenham’s defensive problems at a reasonable price.
